Happy Birthday MOM!

My Mom’s birthday is today and if anybody deserves an award it’s her for putting up with me and my shenanigans. I’d list the dumb things I’ve done but I’m sure you don’t have that kind of time. Instead I think I’ll tell you about her.

Most recently she and my dad took care of our seven children for several days while Carolyn was in the hospital recovering from complications from the birth of our eighth. That was a huge job and a tremendous help. They had watched the children a few weeks before so we could go to a wedding reception and when we called to tell them when we’d be home she answered the phone with a loud h-e-l-p! She was kidding of course and has always had a great sense of humor. (I think she was kidding.)

I’ve learned a lot from my mother over the years but I think I learned best from her that there is a lot you can do yourself if you’re willing to try. She always cut our hair growing up and saved our family a bundle. Now with seven boys of my own I’ve learned to cut their hair–you do the math. It’s not really that hard–I just keep cutting until it looks right or the hair is all gone–whichever comes first. I’ve even cut my own hair for the last ten years or so. That’s a trick that takes some practice.

My mom made most of her own clothes and some of ours, and repaired our clothes when they needed it. No, I don’t make my own clothes but I have learned to do a lot of things on my own that I don’t have to rely on others to do for me.

Most important is the fact that she’s always been one to have a great attitude and spiritually she’s always had a tremendous amount of faith. That’s been good for me and the rest of our family through the years to say the least. There are so many other things I could tell you about my mom but I think you get the idea that she has been and is a super Mom.

Happy Birthday Mom! I love you!
