Pay Much Closer Attention

Self discipline?

I like to sleep in. Some people really enjoy a walk on the beach, some a stroll through the neighborhood. My favorite form of relaxation is sleeping in. I enjoy sleeping in so much that an alarm clock by itself doesn’t motivate me to get out and stay out of bed in the morning. I have been known to hit the snooze button several times and not even remember it.

So I’ve come up with a strategy that seems to work for me. One alarm clock close to the bed gets set to go off about fifteen minutes before I need to get up. I can snooze that clock without having to get out of bed. This satisfies my need to feel like I’m sleeping in and it warns me that the alarm clock across the room is about to go off. When I get out of bed to turn off the second alarm I must stay out of bed?that one is set for the real time I need to be on my feet in the morning and I don’t dare go back to be then. I’ve learned the hard way that if I do return to bed I can be out cold in a wink.

Much the same, the follower of Christ must learn to be disciplined in life if he truly desires to honor God. But we often think it’s all up to us when it comes to “self” discipline. We tend to think discipline is all about our own strengths and weaknesses. We need to remember that as those who’ve given their lives to Christ we have the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us. When we’re obedient and not quenching the Spirit and asking for His help, He often gives the strength to discipline ourselves that’s not of this world.

Be certain, you cannot discipline yourself for the purpose of Godliness without the help of the Holy Spirit. Ask for, rejoice in, depend on, and be confident in the power of the Holy Spirit’s work in your life.

1 Timothy 4:7,8 ?discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
